Do you know what is affecting economies all over the world
today?

Globalisation.

One of the effects we've seen in Singapore is that the Singapore
Government has been actively promoting entrepreneurship in the
recent years.

Do you know what is going on? Why does globalization have such a
big impact on our lives? It's Competition.

We're going to share with some things that you may not have come
across. Have you heard of the term 'Free Agent Nation'?

If you haven't, there's a book called 'Free Agent Nation' by
Daniel H. Pink, and it says that the whole world is moving
towards working for ourselves.

Let me ask you, in developed countries right now,
Are we seeing more and more companies outsourcing their
departments?
Are we seeing more companies hiring contract staff?
(Contract staff meaning that if after half, one or two years,
if I no longer need your service, I can legally say goodbye to you.)

Well, the people who are contract staff, they are

actually free agents. They are no longer working for others. They
are actually working for themselves. For example, if you are an
accountant and you are a contract staff, when your contract
ends, nobody else is responsible for your job. It is now up to
YOU to go and find the next contract you can work on.

The whole world is actually shifting because of globalization.
Are there also jobs that are moving out of the country? Yes. To
where? To countries like China, India, Vietnam, Middle East,
where else? It seems anywhere else but Singapore. (That's why we
need to create not one but TWO IRs - Integrated Resorts.)

You see, globalization has a very big impact
everywhere in the world. Initially, we thought it was only in
this region. But while watching the news about the United
States, where they did a documentary about what is going on,
the fact is that the U.S. is also being affected. More and more
jobs are moving out of their country to China and India as well.

Let us give you an example. If I have a product manufacturing
plant in Singapore or The United States producing MP3 players,
versus I have a manufacturing plant in China producing MP3
players, do you think the costing is going to be different? Yes
or yes?

So in order for companies in Singapore and The United States to
remain competitive, they have to constantly do what?

They have to look for ways to keep their costs very low.

What is one of the main costs factors in Singapore? Labour
costs. That's why many companies are using key performance
indexes (KPI). If you don't perform, you're out. It's no
longer like before where they'll take care of you, yes?

We're seeing salaries more compressed than before. We're
also seeing people getting retrenched at a younger age. We've
met a guy who's only 25 years old and he's already been
retrenched THREE TIMES. We're not joking. It is ridiculous.
There are also many more examples of people who are being
retrenched at their thirties, forties and fifties.

Globalisation is affecting everyone in the world. It brings
about new opportunities for businesses as well as for people to
work overseas as well. Still, overall, who do you think benefits
more - companies or employees? We think it's the companies. Why?
Because there are more and more people we can choose from
to hire. Did you know that university graduates in China send
their resumes to companies saying that they are willing to work
for free for a month? The company can try them out first and
choose to pay them only if they find them good. Isn't it a good
deal for companies? Yes!

But what happens is that senior workers are finding it difficult
to compete in terms of technological knowledge and salary price.
Younger workers also have more energy and are willing to work
longer hours because they don't have family commitments.

Where do you stand? Will you benefit or face
challenges as a result of globalisation? Be aware about what is
going around you and move with the changes.

You can create your life exactly the way you want it.
